This International Women’s Day we’re shining a light on the success stories of young women and girls within the StreetGames network to inspire and motivate others.
Rosheen and Eleeza Khan, aged 20 and 17, are active members of the Grange Pavilion Youth Forum in Grangetown. They became involved with the organisation after lockdown, driven by a desire to give back to their community.
Rosheen and Eleeza’s initial engagement with the Youth Forum was spontaneous – they walked into a room at the Grange Pavilion and found themselves among like-minded young people who shared their passion for community impact. Together, they wanted to establish a girl’s football team, a venture that became a reality with the support of StreetGames who also helped them get their Referee Badges and FAW C Certificates in coaching.
What stands out most about their experience with the Grange Pavilion Youth Forum is the welcoming environment and the friendships they’ve cultivated. They’ve participated in a range of activities, from sports like football, cricket, basketball, and tennis to workshops on creative writing, politics, and arts and crafts. Trips to Wembley, Oakwood Theme Park, and Brecon Beacons have all added memorable experiences to their journey.
As volunteers, Rosheen and Eleeza have contributed to fundraisers, events, and community activities while also acquiring qualifications like First Aid and Mental Health First Aid. Their involvement in the forum has not only enhanced their confidence and skills but also broadened their social circles.
A significant achievement for the duo was winning the Black History Youth Award for sports, recognising their efforts in promoting sports development in Grangetown. Looking ahead, their aspiration is to establish a girl’s football facility in their community, a goal they’re actively pursuing with StreetGames’ support. Coaching sessions have already begun, and they aim to enter competitions and leagues in the near future.
Rosheen and Eleeza credit StreetGames for playing a pivotal role in their journey. Participation in Young Advisor training and the Peer Research Project has provided them with valuable skills and insights, furthering their girl’s football project.
Their journey really shows how much young people can achieve when they come together and support each other. Rosheen and Eleeza’s commitment is what International Women’s Day is all about – celebrating women who are making a difference and inspiring others to do the same.
